24th Apr 2020 - 15th Aug 2020
Scott: The Man Behind the Monument was originally a FREE four-week Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) produced by the University of Aberdeen and Abbotsford. However, in response to the Covid-19 crisis and the increased demand for armchair learning opportunities, it has been decided to keep this popular course open and free for people to drop into until August. The course will be mentored once a week by tutors during this time, before the launch of a fully-mentored version to celebrate Scott’s birthday in August.
The course has specifically been designed for beginners and there is no prior knowledge of the subject required. It requires no more than two hours of work each week and will provide a comprehensive overview of Scott’s work and legacy, while challenging common misconceptions.
Professor Ali Lumsden, Director of the University’s Walter Scott Research Centre and Honorary Librarian at Abbotsford, will deliver a series of video-based modules as part of the course, along with Kirsty Archer-Thompson, Collections and Interpretation Manager at Abbotsford.
You’ll explore and discuss selections of Scott’s work, whilst reflecting upon his cultural impact and enduring literary legacy. You’ll understand Scott’s significance as a poet and novelist and will become familiar with some of his best-loved work, such as Waverley and The Heart of Mid-Lothian. You’ll also gain an understanding of how and why he was inspired to write, how literature can shape heritage and national identity and Scott's impact on our wider material culture.
The course involves watching the video content, reading extracts and passages from Scott’s works, engaging with questions and discussions, and some short activities. You can also engage and debate with online learners from across the world on some of the issues we’ll raise, from identity, nationhood, history and truth to the cultural and contemporary resonance of Scott. You don’t have to comment and discuss with one another if you don’t wish to, but doing so is probably one of the most rewarding aspects of the course.
