Visiting the historic house or gardens on a Friday or Sunday? Then why not make time to join our Abbotsford Inside Out tour and discover the secrets and stories about Sir Walter Scott’s ‘outdoor rooms’. Learn how Abbotsford evolved over time and what its architecture reveals about the obsessions and quirks of the man behind it all, as we celebrate Scott’s achievements and legacy in his 250th anniversary year.
The Inside Out tour will explore the design of Scott’s Regency-era gardens and the architecture of his beautiful home, telling a wealth of stories about this great writer’s love of history, mythology and the natural world. It will also reveal him to be as much of a trendsetter and an innovator outdoors as he was inside his fantasy home.
Our guide will meet you at the front entrance of the house at 11:30am and 2pm on Fridays and Sundays to explore the features, views and stories that make Abbotsford so unique in this special 250th anniversary year.
Tickets are adult £5 and child £3.50, and must be purchased with a ticket to visit the house, chapel & gardens, or gardens only. Prebooking is strongly advised as places are limited due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Note: This tour will base itself in and around the walled gardens and the North Terraces overlooking the river. Sturdy, sensible footwear and outdoor clothing are advisable. Places are limited to 10 people. Children under the age of 12 can go free and do not count within this quota.
