Scottober Reads: Waverley

13th October 2025

Scottober Reads

'Scottober Reads' is a seasonal series that will explore the dark and strange works of Sir Walter Scott. Each week during October, we’re going to delve into a new tale, drawn from Scott’s vast body of work.

Last week, we were cast ashore on the haunted edges of Shetland with The Pirate. This week, our journey moves into the Highlands – a landscape steeped in legend. While not a ghost story in the traditional sense, Waverley is rich with the quiet rumbling of a fading world. In Scott's hands, history becomes something uncanny.

Step into a world where every glen holds a memory, and the past walks with you every step of the way.

Waverley

Set against the haunting backdrop of the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion, this story follows young Edward Waverley, an Englishman sent to Scotland with the Hanoverian army. Waverley is soon seduced by the wild Highlands and the passionate loyalty of its people. He finds himself drawn into the world of the mysterious Fergus Mac-Ivor and his sister, Flora.

Caught between two worlds, one grounded and rational, the other fevered with rebellion and romance, Edward is soon branded a traitor. Haunted by divided loyalties, echoes of battle, and the downfall of those he once trusted, he is forced to find his way through the shadowed aftermath of a lost cause.

Waverley draws you into a Scotland where the ghosts of the past refuse to rest.
