Lord Sanderson of Bowden
6th July 2026
The Trustees, staff and volunteers of The Abbotsford Trust are deeply saddened by the passing of Lord Sanderson of Bowden.
Lord Sanderson was the first Chairman of The Abbotsford Trust from 2008 to 2015 and played an instrumental role in the charity's foundation. Under his leadership, the Trust secured the funding for the major restoration of Sir Walter Scott's home on the banks of the River Tweed, together with the visitor centre that continues to welcome thousands of visitors each year.

Lord Sanderson was an extraordinary man whose sparkling spirit, sense of adventure and genuine interest in others inspired those who knew him. This shone through in the many fundraising lunches and dinners he hosted on behalf of Abbotsford, helping to secure Abbotsford’s future.
Lord Sanderson's vision and leadership helped shape The Abbotsford Trust into the thriving charity it is today. His legacy and support will endure in the preservation of Sir Walter Scott's home and in the many lives touched by Abbotsford for generations to come.
Our thoughts are with all of Lord Sanderson's family and friends at this sad time.
