Abbotsford: The Perfect Day Trip from Edinburgh

3rd February 2026

Today, Professor Steve Solosky of Small Group Tours by The Traveling Professor spoke about bringing his small groups of 12-16 travellers to Abbotsford. When he first began leading his guests from the U.S. and Canada to Scotland, Abbotsford wasn’t even open to the public. But times have changed, and now, he says, “It is probably the best addition we have made to our tour since we started back in 2010.”

Steve explains that guests “love taking a break from bustling Edinburgh to escape into the peaceful Scottish countryside and enjoy a relaxing day away.” And Abbotsford, Sir Walter Scott’s extraordinary home on the River Tweed, is the ideal place to do just that.

A Scenic Journey South

The drive from Edinburgh to Abbotsford takes just over an hour, but Steve suggests making the short detour to Scott’s View. From this tranquil lookout point, visitors are treated to sweeping panoramas of the River Tweed, rolling green hills, patchwork farmland, and the distinctive triple peaks of the Eildon Hills, a landscape said to have been Sir Walter Scott’s favourite. “It just puts you in the right mood for a visit to Scott’s home in the Borders of Scotland.”

Exploring the House of a Literary Legend

Upon arriving at Abbotsford, most guests start with a visit to the house itself. Painstakingly restored and preserved, it remains much as it was during Sir Walter Scott’s lifetime. The rooms are filled with fascinating artefacts and curiosities, and while labelling is kept to a minimum to preserve the atmosphere, Steve highly recommends taking a guided tour. “The affable and engaging guides make the stories of Abbotsford just so much more memorable,” he says.

Gardens Full of Romance and Beauty

After exploring the house, travellers can wander through Abbotsford’s gardens, a true highlight of the visit. “The gardens are a masterpiece, full of romance and beauty,” Steve remarks. Guests often say that strolling through these peaceful, flower-filled spaces feels like stepping into one of Scott’s timeless novels.

The Chapel and a Quiet Moment

Tucked away within the grounds, the chapel at Abbotsford is a small Gothic-style treasure built by Scott as a private place of worship for his family. With its intricate stone carvings, colourful stained glass, and serene atmosphere, it offers a moment of calm reflection amid the grandeur of the estate.

A Relaxing Finish

To complete the perfect day, Steve’s groups take a short walk back to the Visitor Centre for lunch. With its welcoming atmosphere and scenic setting, it’s the ideal way to unwind after a morning of exploration.

As Steve sums up: “Abbotsford isn’t just a visit — it’s an experience. It’s where history, literature, and the beauty of the Scottish Borders all come together.”
