MARY MONICA MAXWELL SCOTT

Mary Monica Hope Scott was born in 1852 and married the Hon Joseph Constable-Maxwell in 1874. They adopted the surname Maxwell Scott.

Mary Monica followed her great grandfather and became a writer of historical books, including an authoritative guide to Scott’s precious collection of ‘gabions’ entitled Abbotsford: a Guide to the Personal Relics and Possessions of Sir Walter Scott.

At one point the only living descendant of Sir Walter Scott, Mary Monica had eight children, five of whom survived her. On her death in 1920 her eldest son, Walter, inherited Abbotsford.

Scott had four children, Sophia, Walter, Anne and Charles

Charlotte and John Hope Scott

On the death of Scott’s son Walter in 1847, Abbotsford passed to Scott’s granddaughter, Charlotte.

Major General Sir Walter Maxwell Scott

Major General Sir Walter Maxwell Scott was born in 1875. He married Mairi Richmond Macdougall in 1918 and they had two children, Patricia and Jean.

Dame Jean and Mrs Patricia Maxwell Scott

Patricia Maxwell Scott was born in 1921 and married Harold Boulton in 1944. The marriage was annulled and Patricia reverted to the Maxwell Scott surname in 1951.

Scott's Family Today

Although at one time reduced to just one individual, Mary Monica Hope-Scott, Sir Walter Scott now has many direct descendants in the UK, Australia and Canada.
