House Conservation Assistant

Permanent contract

Part time 11 hours per week, ideally split over Mondays and Thursdays

£10.94 per hour rising to £11.44 from 1 April, with aspirations of becoming a real living wage employer soon.

Abbotsford, the home built and furnished by the nineteenth-century writer Sir Walter Scott, is one of the most famous writer’s houses in the world, containing a world-class collection of historical objects and furniture. Would you like to help us care for it? We are seeking a trustworthy and friendly House Conservation Assistant to join our small and dedicated Heritage team, overseeing museum housekeeping and preventative conservation of our historic interiors with full training provided. The appointed candidate may also be tasked with working in our secure storage areas and other areas containing Abbotsford’s historic collection items, such as exhibition spaces and our accommodation wing.

This ideal candidate will be keen to learn and passionate about heritage sites like Abbotsford, monitoring the condition and stability of its interiors and collection items to safeguard them for the future. They will also work behind the scenes with colleagues and volunteers over the closure period in January and February to conduct more extensive behind the scenes work
