Steam Train Excursions

This summer, take the opportunity to travel to Abbotsford by steam train, crossing the most famous railway bridge in the world and the beautiful Borders landscape.

Take a daytrip on a train hauled by a LMS Black Five steam locomotive, organised by The Scottish Railway Preservation Society over some of Scotland's most scenic railways.

Experience the Borders Railway Line and enjoy a visit to Abbotsford on your arrival to Tweedbank or discover the Border towns of Melrose and Galashiels. You can book your tickets, including your visit to Abbotsford, on the Scottish Railway Preservation Website.

Why not enjoy Ochiltree's delicious lunch buffet after your morning on the train and discover Abbotsford at your own pace. The modern light interior of the cafe and outdoor balcony area offer commanding views over Abbotsford and the surrounding countryside and are the perfect place to unwind. Enjoy Sir Walter's Lunch, inspired by some of Scott's own favourites and prepared with fresh and local ingredients.

Alternatively, join a guided tour of the historic house, then explore the gardens and walk the banks of the Tweed. Take-away 'Abbotsford Picnic' options will be available to prebook, while our small kiosk will be stocked for the day - Perfect for a picnic out of doors!
